12 July 2010 School Sports Week Closes in Style!

Whitchurch, Roxbourne, Grimsdyke and Vaughan schoolchildren from Harrow celebrate this year's Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week, 28 June to 2 July, by taking part in fencing, archery, climbing and many more.

The children, all aged between 7 and 12, arrived bursting with excitement at the Leisure Centre on Friday morning to a Closing Ceremony which celebrated all of the varied sporting events which schools ran during National School Sports Week. Other activities have included a swimming gala, a golf competition (called the Harr-Open!) and two mini Tennis festivals, all held at local sports clubs in an attempt to encourage children to take up more sport outside of the school gates.

As the children arrived they were sent straight to their first sports zone to spend half an hour experiencing some activities which would be new to them. Vaughan school picked up their foils and started fencing which, by the huge smiles on the children's faces, was enjoyed tremendously!

A short stroll to the Climbing Zone saw Whitchurch students ascending 20feet above the ground, attached by ropes being held by their friends and teachers.

In the Archery Zone, children from Roxbourne took it in turns to act like Robin Hood and shoot arrows into targets situated in front of a giant net.

The badminton and table tennis zones welcomed two more groups of children with an added bonus of a talent spotter from Harrow's Table Tennis Club identifying a student who had never played before as a future star!

At the end of the event, the children now exhausted after playing over two hours of different sports, had a chance to sit down and congratulate the winners of the Olympic inspired Values Awards. Councillor Brian Gate, portfolio holder for Schools and Colleges, presented the Friendship Award to Alisha from Roxbourne. Maddy from Vaughan won the Respect Award which was presented by Mitzi Green, portfolio holder for Children's Services, and the Excellence Awards was presented by Louise Lewinson, a Young Sports Ambassador, to Asia from Grimsdyke.

"Children should be given a range of sports to experience and learn that there is more to life than football- just ask the national team! National School Sports Weeks aims to highlight the importance of PE and physical activity within schools and to children and their families and, demonstrated by the huge number of schools which have run activities this week, it's been a great success in Harrow" Dan Wilson, Harrow's School Sport Partnership.
